What is Auto-enrolment?

Auto-enrolment is a legal requirement for UK employers to enrol eligible workers into a workplace pension scheme and contribute to it.

Employees aged 22 to State Pension age, earning over £10,000 annually, must be enrolled.

Not usually, unless they have a contract of employment and meet eligibility criteria.

Auto-enrolment was introduced in October 2012 and rolled out in stages based on employer size.

The minimum total contribution is 8% of qualifying earnings and 5% from the employee, and 3% from the employer.

Qualifying earnings include salary, wages, overtime, bonuses, and statutory payments between £6,240 and £50,270 (2025/26 rates).
